Not going to lie, I am having a hard time coming up with ideas for these journal entries...
A few months ago, Ryan and I found this website called WorkAway.Info. Here is their mission statement:
Workaway.info is a site set up to promote fair exchange between budget travellers, language learners or culture seekers and families, individuals or organizations who are looking for help with a range of varied and interesting activities. Our philosophy is simple: A few hours honest help per day in exchange for food and accommodation and an opportunity to learn about the local lifestyle and community, with friendly hosts in varying situations and surroundings.
Doesn't this sound amazing? We were so stoked on it, it seems like the best way to get to know people, by exchanging service! We have read lots of good feedback from users, and we would definitely love to host people someday when we have our own place. This is how we are organizing our 2 month long stay in Greece. We found a family that has an organic farm that we will be helping on, and we will be confirming our stay with them closer to our departure date. I think we will like this better than Couch Surfing (although I have not tried it), because I feel better about asking to exchange than for a favor. We are also are very interested in sustainable living ourselves so this will be perfect. I also checked out WWOOFing, and that sounds pretty rad too. I think it is similar to work away, but it is more specific to organic farms, whereas WorkAway is more broad in work services.
The place that we are staying is several hours away from Athens by bus, but we should be able to make it to the city for a few days every couple of weeks or so. I have high hopes...
